OPHTHALMOLOGY
Ophthalmic disease models of human autoimmune or genetic disorders are available. Microscopic examinations and ocular histology are used to evaluate the disease and characterize drug efficacy. Intravitreal injections are commonly performed at SIA as a possible route of drug delivery.
Leber's Hereditary Optic Neuropathy (LHON)
ENDOTOXIN INDUCED UVEITIS EIU
EIU is a useful model for the study of acute and sub-acute anterior ocular inflammation in humans. The EIU model represents an inflammatory response driven by innate immune mechanisms. It is elicited by systemic injection of bacterial endotoxin (lipopolysaccharide, LPS) to rats or mice.
The histopathology of EIU is characterized by a transient yet intense acute inflammatory cellular infiltration of neutrophils and macrophages, protein accumulation in the anterior chamber as well as mild posterior vitritis.
